THE HISTORY OF THE LEO MOVEMENT

The Beginning – Lions Clubs International

Founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones in Chicago, Lions Clubs International was built on a simple belief: that kindness and community service can change the world.
What started as a small circle of professionals dedicated to serving others has grown into the world’s largest volunteer service organization, with more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries and territories.

The Birth of the Leo Movement

The Leo Program began in 1957 at Abington High School, Pennsylvania, USA, sponsored by the Glenside Lions Club.
The goal was to encourage young people to develop leadership through service.
By 1967, the program had been formally adopted by Lions Clubs International, giving rise to the acronym LEO – Leadership, Experience, Opportunity.
Today, there are more than 200 Leo Clubs worldwide, empowering youth to create lasting impact in their communities.

The Leo Story in Africa and District 411A

The Leo Movement reached East Africa in the 1970s, spreading rapidly through Lions’ mentorship and youth engagement initiatives.
Over the decades, Leos have championed key causes including health, education, and environmental sustainability, always guided by the principle of “Leadership Through Service.”

District 411A, encompassing Kenya, Ethiopia, and Seychelles, formally established its Leo District structure under Lions District 411A to strengthen youth coordination, leadership training, and cross-border collaboration.
